FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Artist goes Homeless For One Week to raise awareness
New York City – July 14, 2010 – In about 4 short weeks Yusef Ramleize will be going Homeless for One Week to raise awareness and money for the Food Bank for NYC.
In New York City, the number of New Yorkers who report difficulty affording food and shelter has doubled to four million since 2003; imagine being homeless without nothing to eat in the hot summer days with temperatures over 90 degrees.
Well, Ramelize is done imagining. He’s am going to experience the reality of thousands of unfortunate New Yorkers. He’s going to leave the comfort of his apartment and job to be homeless for one week during the month of Ramadan from August 15th to August 21 to bring attention to the plight of the homeless worldwide.
According the Coalition for the Homeless briefing paper by Patrick Markee, Senior Policy Analyst, NYC homeless shelter population has reached an all-time high. There are over 39,000 homeless people and 10,000 homeless families in shelters each night.
“I want my experience to open peoples eyes and help inspire them to want to do more,” said Ramelize. During his week on the street, Ramelize will really experience life as a homeless person. He will not be taking any food, his metro card or a change of clothes. He will have a friend meet him for five minutes each day in Union Square to record interviews of his experiences.
Ramelize began Homeless For One Week in 2009 after the financial crisis in our country left many people jobless and homeless. His goal is to plan and complete one project annually that will draw attention to this devastating problem, while donating 100% of the money raised to a different non profit organization each year.
Join him at the pre- fund raising event scheduled for Thursday August 5th from 6:00pm to 9:30pm at the Gallery Bar, 120 Orchard Street.
This event at the Gallery bar is free and open to the public. To learn more about this event and future events visit the website: http://www.homelessforoneweek.com/events.html
